The field of clerical jobs has widened since the invention of the computer, but it is not considered one of the hot career fields. Currently, those jobs are had to be in Information Technology and nursing. The latter is especially true as the American population gets older. Nevertheless, the demand has remained steady even if not everybody wants to be a secretary. Clerical jobs are to be found throughout the world. Even the person who rings you out at the local supermarket has one.

The names for clerical jobs have changed. A person can be an administrative assistant, a medical office manager or something else, but at the core of it, a person with a clerical job still handles the paperwork and the computer work that the professional or professionals they work for does not specialize. Some clerical jobs involve nothing more than entering data into a computer.

However, as with any other job, a person must have the skills needed before he or she can enter it. It used to be that not everyone could type, although the advent of the computer has made this less likely. A secretary must still take know shorthand, take dictation, and type and compose letters. Clerks often serve as an intermediary between other members of the staff, customers, and the person whose name is on the office door.

Almost all clerical jobs require attention to detail and a working knowledge of the English language. An administrative assistant may not called upon to edit the documents of his employer, but he certainly must make sure she does not introduce any errors when copying his work.

They may also be called upon to do a variety of tasks including copying papers, making coffee and filling out forms. The vast majority of clerical jobs only require a High School diploma. Some, however, such as a Paralegal require specialized training. The training usually takes between eighteen months to one year to complete.

What kind of advancements are available with clerical jobs?

For clerical jobs you must have good speed of type writing and shorthand skills. If you have some sort of computer knowlege and analytical skills you have a good future in clerical jobs like secretary post, business analyst, bpo carrer etc. Clerical job advancement has diminished immensely in the past few years. High level clerical roles still exist, but they are becoming less common as standard computer and business machine knowledge is required for workers of all levels in offices. Areas where specialized clerical skills are required have more room for advancement. Examples are medical and legal fields.
