It is designed for people to have a voice in government, but have representatives do the every day business of government.
Representative government is often referred to as a "republic" or a "representative democracy." In this system, elected officials represent the interests of the citizens, making decisions on their behalf. This contrasts with direct democracy, where citizens vote on policies directly. Representative governments are designed to balance the need for efficient governance with the principles of democratic participation.
The democracy of the US depends on the participation of its citizens because it is tailored to be a representative democracy. Citizens need to be involved by voting in representatives who represent their views.
In the US, representative democracy is used in the form of a bicameral legislature (House of Representatives and Senate) where elected officials represent the interests of their constituents. Citizens vote for representatives who then make laws and policies on their behalf. This system allows for a balance between direct input from the people and the practical need for efficient decision-making.
It is a representative democracy. In a direct democracy, citizens vote directly on issues concerning the community, while in a representative democracy, the citizens vote on people to represent them in making the decisions.
In a direct democracy, every single member of the group has an equal say in every single decision. This is not workable on a day to day basis for large groups. In a representative democracy, people elect representatives, who vote on the issues.Representative democracy is the basis of constitutional democracy. Representatives are chosen by the people to act in their best interest, not necessarily to vote the way the people want them to in every circumstance. Direct democracy is very difficult to maintain when a population becomes too large. Some societies operate with a combination of both types of democracy. For example, in some countries, such as France, Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland, some issues, for example, changes to the constitution, can be decided by a popular vote on that specific issue. In some of the small Swiss cantons (states) such as Glarus, all citizens are entitled to attend an annual meeting which votes retrospectively on the laws passed during the preceding year by their representatives. and also credit to the person who last posted this
The founding fathers didn't want to put the country in a position in which we need to worry about tyranny of the majority. This is why we have two Houses in Congress, and why we have the three main branches of federal government.
