Workingman's comp is usually known as worker's compensation. Basically, an employer must pay an employee worker's comp when he or she is injured on the job in certain situations. Not all on-the-job injuries will qualify for compensation, but it can be seen as a sort of temporary disability payment when a person is unable to work. Most workers will never receive such payments, but others who do become injured on the job will - multiple times even. Still, it's always best to not get hurt on the job to the point where it is impossible for an individual to work.

What injuries qualify for workingman's comp?

In most cases, any injury suffered while on the job can qualify a worker for compensation. The worker must be unable to work. Also, some fault of the employer usually increases an employee's chances of receiving disability payments. A person that simply hurts themselves outside of their job won't qualify for any type of compensation. On top of that, any accident intentionally caused by an employee to hurt themselves will disqualify him or her from compensation. Employers do have the right to launch an investigation into any workingman's compensation claims. Of course, anyone with a legitimate injury from work-related accidents will receive disability pay.

How long do payments last?

The employer is usually the entity that takes care of paying worker's comp payments. For the most part, a person will receive disability pay for as long as he or she is injured and cannot work. Payments usually cease when a person is able to return to work. At that point, he or she will be paid like normal. This all means that payments may last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months or even longer. Most people only receive compensation for a few weeks at the most because minor injuries are fairly common.

Unfortunately, worker's compensation isn't always enough for workers who become injured while working. Such pay is usually around two-thirds of a person's total weekly or monthly paycheck, so it won't always cover expenses each week. Therefore, most workers who become injured try to get back on the job as soon as physically possible.
