Couriers transport packages or documents from one location to another. While a driver's license is required for some positions, bike courier jobs rarely require more than a high school education from an applicant. For the most part, couriers only transfer packages and documents in a local area. Most of them, therefore, offer same day delivery services. Some may even offer same-hour services.

Modern couriers receive instructions via mobile phone, wireless data, or two way radio, as well as in person. In many cases they will also take payments upon delivery, and might require signatures from the recipient.

There are some couriers who work exclusively for one organization such as a corporation, law firm, bank, lab, or financial organization. Some may also deliver mail within the same company or even within the same building. Couriers may be hired in-house, or they may work for a courier service. Experienced messengers may work for themselves as independent contractors.

One of the benefits of work as a courier is that the work is not closely supervised so long as the packages are delivered on time safely and signatures are obtained. Bike couriers require a certain level of fitness in order to withstand a full work day of pedaling. They also must be prepared to deal with all different kinds of weather environments.

Despite the fact that couriers are not closely supervised, the pressure of delivering documents and packages on time and in good condition can become stressful for some individuals. Couriers who are paid based on the number of deliveries may also take on more work than they should in order to remain safe.

While many couriers work a standard work week from Monday to Friday, it is not uncommon for some of them to deliver packages on weekends.

While bike couriers are not expected to have more than a high school diploma, it is important to have good communication skills and to know your way around town.

Most jobs in the field do not require intense training. Most will learn the job as they go, working as an apprentice under somebody who has had experience with the job. Training rarely lasts for very long. Couriers can expect to earn roughly $11 or $12 an hour.
