Heading out on your first Caribbean cruise is an exciting adventure for many people, and often time, a once in a lifetime opportunity. While the accommodations and offerings of each cruise line will vary from one another, there are some universal similarities between most Caribbean cruises. Knowing what lies ahead of you, and preparing for such, can provide a sense of preparedness that will allow you to fully enjoy your cruise rather than getting overwhelmed by the unknown.

After boarding the ship, you will be led to your cabin by one of the staff members. Be prepared to enter a room that is very unlike the hotel rooms you are accustomed to having. The cabins tend to be much smaller than standard hotel rooms, although they do generally manage to do quite a bit with limited space. You will have a bed, television, storage space and there will generally be a small sitting area. Unlike hotels though, you won't want to spend most of your time in your room when traveling on a Caribbean cruise; there is too much to do throughout the ship to waste time in your cabin. Get out there and enjoy the amenities of the boat.

Dining and drink services can vary from ship to ship, but most will fall into one of two categories. In the first instance, you may be given an assigned table and time for you to enjoy your meals. Some people are not fond of this setup because it generally requires you to dine with strangers and forces you to adhere to a regimented schedule. On the other hand, some ships offer buffet dining 24 hours a day and allow their guests to enjoy as much food from their daily selection as they would like, at any time that is convenient to them. Whichever setup is the present on your ship, you can generally count on being served fresh and adequately tasty meals, but don't expect to receive a five-star meal at each sitting.

Planning everything ahead of time is not a necessity for enjoying your Caribbean cruise, and in fact, it is not recommended to try and plan everything. Having a plan of attack for your trip can alleviate some of the stress that comes along with an overwhelming vacation, but don't let that stop you from being spontaneous and going with the flow; you never know what opportunity may come your way.
