There are lots of different entities that hire nurses. Even if you only think a hospital hires nurses, that is still a large number of jobs each year. There are other types of places that need nurses on site, as well, making this profession one that is largely transferable across the country. So what sorts of places would one target if he or she was a nurse?

Hospitals are the obvious answer

The bulk of nurses are employed in hospitals around the country. While there, nurses can serve a large number of different roles. Some will work in the ER. Some will work in special surgery. Some will work in general medicine. It all depends upon the nurse and what he or she is good at. Some people prefer to move around, while others specialize. Know that in hospitals, the average starting salary for nurses is usually around $65,000. This can be adjusted up or down depending upon where you want to work and what the cost of living in that area happens to be.

Getting hired in other ways

Getting hired by the hospital is not the only way to land a job as a nurse. You might also choose to work in a hospice capacity. These nurses work at nursing homes and they work around the elderly. They sometimes make home visits and work with people as they near the end. It takes a special kind of person to do this sort of work and it does pay slightly less than what a traditional nurse would make.

Others choose to work in schools or at colleges. Schools around the country need nurses to handle their sick kids and take care of the little problems that might arise. This is a good way for nurses to lead a less stressful lifestyle with better hours. These jobs do force a nurse to sacrifice a bit in the way of financial compensation, though.
