Telemarketers call customers from a central location and attempt to sell them products or services over the phone. When these calls have not been produced by a previous "lead," this is known as "cold calling."

Income for different sales positions can greatly vary. This is due to the fact that almost all sales people make a good portion of their income from commissions produced through actual sales. However, estimates of average incomes have been calculated. Based on experience and the company a person works for, an inside salesperson can expect make anywhere from $25,000 to $68,000 a year. An outside sales person can expect to make anywhere from $28,000 to $96,000 a year.

To enter this career field a person must first meet a number of different qualifications. First, you will need to be 18 years of age, a legal United States citizen, and pass a criminal background check. Some education will also be required. For certain positions, a Bachelor's degree in a field related to sales may be preferred. However, other entry level positions may only require a high school diploma.
