After you have addressed any water and humidity problems with your home, you then can work on removing mold. If you need to clean a large area of mold in your home, keep the following precautions in mind:

  • When handling or cleaning moldy materials and cleaning solutions, wear protective gloves and eye goggles and dress in long sleeves and pants that can be easily removed in the work area and laundered.
  • Minimize exposure to mold spores by using a respirator designed for particle removal for protection against inhaling mold spores. Respirators can be purchased from hardware stores. Be advised that such respirators will not protect you from fumes.
  • Make sure the room is properly ventilated while you are cleaning; bleach solutions are irritating to the eyes, nose and throat.
  • Start by trying to remove a small amount of mold to determine if you will have a health reaction to either the mold or the cleaning products. If you have a reaction, or if your home has so much mold that you cannot manage the cleanup on your own, contact a professional experienced in cleaning mold in homes. You also may need to hire a professional if mold is growing in an area of your home that is difficult to access, such as in ductwork.
  • Make sure you prevent the spores and mold-contaminated dust from going into other parts of your home by hanging plastic sheeting to separate the area.
  • Place the moldy items, cleaning rags and anything else that comes in contact with the mold in airtight plastic trash bags. Seal the bags before disposing of them. When you finish cleaning, immediately wash the clothing you were wearing.

Your house smell like mildew how do you get rid of the smell i tried febreeze and carpet fresh nothing helps. i also cleaned the carpet please help?

you must find the mildew or mold source first- you can't get rid of the smell if you don't know where it is coming from- if it's drywall i have inserted a ehow link- http://www.ehow.com/how_2056875_eliminate-mold-from-drywall.html you may need prfeesional help if you cannot locate it yourself- check for water damage and go from there Suggest you find where the mildew is located and remove it. One place to check is the A/C drip pan and the A/C ducts. If in A/C Ducts, need to clean or replace them. Also, look on line for mold and mildew remediation techniques.

How can you get rid of mold?

spray it with bleach let it sit and then spray with vinegar or water. repeat if needed ,leave bleach on for a night reapplying frequently.NOT true bleach and vinegar DO NOT kill mold go to EPA WEBSITE ..Kill mold with flo-X Mold and Mildew Cleaner for best results.Read more: How_do_you_get_rid_of_mold_on_flox_flowersThe biggest myth is Mold and Mildew Stain Removers, as a mold stain is the residue left over from dried out mold. THis means these products are only cleaning the stain left over after the mold is already dead, not actually killing the mold. Its a grey area where manufacturers of these cleaners are trying to get around EPA regulations. As for Mildew, mildew is a grime (dirt) not mold.

What is the difference between mold and mildew?

Mold and mildew have many similar characteristics, but they are different types of fungi, and are often different in color and texture. Mold and mildew are often mentioned together as they can both grow in many of the same moist and warm locations. However, mildew is often found more often than mold in showers, paper and fabrics and mold is usually found more often than mildew in foods. They can sometimes be difficult to tell apart as they both spread out from spores. Mold is often black, green, red or blue in color while mildew is usually gray or white. The two main types of mildew are powdery and downy. Powdery mildew is commonly found on roses and other flowering plants. Powdery mildew is created by an ascomycota type of fungus. Downy mildew is from the oomycota type of fungus and is found in agricultural products such as grapes and potatoes. Both mold and mildew thrive in damp environments, so keeping areas dry is the main preventative measure to help eliminate the fungi. Bathrooms are a prime source of mold and mildew as not only are they often damp, but they also usually do not have a lot of ventilation. Some molds have toxins called mycotoxins that some people may be allergic to. Symptoms of a mold allergy may include headaches, Asthma and coughing. Irritation of the eyes and throat may also occur as a result of breathing mold toxins. Molds are not always harmful; the antibiotic penicillin was created from the mold of the same name. Moldy food should not be eaten. A mildew infestation on paper and some fabrics cannot be scrubbed off, but a mildew remover can usually get rid of mildew on harder surfaces such as surfaces in bathrooms. Some mold and mildew removal products should not be used by asthmatics or in an area that is not well-ventilated. Bleach solutions are often effective in killing both mold and mildew.
