Workers are trained, if they have no previous cleaning experience, to correctly perform duties which keep office buildings clean, sanitary, orderly, and in good condition. The most common tasks involved can include disposing of trash, vacuuming carpets, mopping solid floors, washing windows, and sometimes cleaning bathrooms.

Applicants to office cleaning jobs can be either men or women who are in relatively good health, as this work requires physical activity. Sometimes people with disabilities, depending on what their limitations are, can be hired for this work, especially if part of a team. The age limit is usually 18, though some states allow people as young as 16 to work.

Sometimes workers may be in companies that specialize one type of cleaning, such as washing windows, rather than multiple tasks. On a typical day, janitors may perform a variety of heavy cleaning duties, such as washing walls and glass, removing trash, cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, sweeping, dust and polish furniture, vacuum carpets, and sanitizing equipment by wiping down solid surfaces with disinfectant and germicides.

Workers use many kinds of tools, equipment, and cleaning materials. For some jobs, they may use standard cleaning implements such as cloths, brooms and squirt bottles; other tasks may require an electric floor polishing machine and special cleaning solution. Improved chemical cleaners, building materials, and power equipment have made many tasks less time consuming and easier, but cleaning workers must learn the proper use of equipment and cleaners to avoid harming floors, fixtures, building occupants, and themselves.

Working with machines can be noisy, and some tasks, such as cleaning bathrooms and trash rooms, can be dirty and unpleasant. Building cleaning workers experience injuries more frequently than workers in most other occupations. They may suffer cuts, bruises, and burns from machines, hand tools, and chemicals. They spend most of their time on their feet, sometimes lifting or pushing heavy furniture or equipment. Many tasks, such as dusting or sweeping, require constant bending, stooping, and stretching.

Office buildings are usually cleaned when office buildings are closed before and after business hours. Many office cleaning jobs are done in the evening, though some work is done during the day. When there is a need for 24-hour maintenance, janitors may be assigned to shifts. A substantial number of workers had part-time hours, but some have full time work with 40 hours in a week. Part time cleaning may be done in the evenings and on weekends.
