The responsibilities of a laboratory technician are many and varied, and the educational requirements can change immensely depending on what type of lab you work in. Many people believe that the only people working labs are trained scientists with upper-level degrees, but the reality is that the majority of people that work in laboratories as technicians don't even have a bachelors degree. Most have no more than an associates degree, and many have nothing more than a high school diploma and some workplace certifications. No matter what level of education you are at right now, there is a laboratory technician job out there for you.

Some of these laboratory technician jobs will require you to have specialized certifications. For example, if you were to work in a geology lab that is involved with the dating of various rocks, you would absolutely need to be certified in hazardous materials handling. This is because geology labs use radioactive isotopes to help date rocks and determine their composition, meaning you would be involved in using some seriously dangerous materials. On the other hand, if you are simply working as a technician in a paternity lab, you may only need to become internally certified in the use of the machinery itself.

The day to day work of a laboratory technician is more or less as consistent as any other job out there. You will generally be responsible for one aspect of a "chain" of events that happens in the laboratory. You may be in charge of maintaining equipment, handling hazardous materials, or even recording notes. Some jobs may have you doing all of these things, but those jobs come with higher levels of responsibility that generally correspond with a higher degree of education. Of course, there is a lot of wiggle room in the profession for people that really display a vigor and passion for the work.

Becoming a laboratory technician is not an insurmountable task, and can generally be accomplished by just about anyone that has even a slight amount of common sense. While some laboratory technician jobs may require you to gain certifications, these are generally not difficult to attain.
