An X-ray technician translates and takes X-rays and performs diagnostic testing by administering contrast materials into the patient’s blood stream. X-ray technicians are normally employed in hospitals or doctors’ offices and in some instances may have their own office. The field is growing rapidly and the demand for ex-ray technicians is increasing and can provide stable employment. As an x-ray technician, great communication, good observation skills and precision is a must.

X-ray Technician training and education:

There are different training programs available. X-ray technician programs can last anywhere from one to four years and an associate degree, bachelors degree or certificate can be obtained. The most common of the three is the two-year associate degree. A minimum requirement of a high school diploma or GED is needed to enroll into an x-ray technician training program. Some of the classes you can expect to take during training are radiation physics, physiology, imaging principles, medical terminology, radiobiology, pathology and medical ethics. One in the field an x-ray technician may choose to advance their training to become Radiologic specialists. Some of the specialty fields include performing CT scans, MRI, and mammography.

X-ray Technician job description:

As an x-ray technician, you will work closely with doctors and nurses. You will prepare the patient for x-ray procedures. This includes positioning the patient correctly, giving enemas and in some cases injecting intravenous fluids to highlight a certain part of the body. They process films, keep records of patients, and operate the equipment. They also help to make the patient feel comfortable during the procedures.

In 2006 the estimated median earnings for x-ray technicians averaged $48,170. The top ten percent earned $68,000 a year or more. The career outlook for x-ray technicians is very good. The demand for x-ray technicians is estimated to increase by 15 percent by the year 2016. The longer you are employed as an x-ray technician, the more your salary will increase.
