Things you could think about: people might prefer having the economy directly controlled by an elected government which they could vote out (or if not elected, at least one that claims to represent their social class).

There would probably be more state support for the poor. The USSR had almost full employment until it collapsed. Much of the work done was economically useless, but it was a very stable society.

Look up socialism, capitalism, entrepreneurship, workers' councils, class struggle, on Wikipedia.

An economy directly controlled by elected representatives would be like having a trail by jury without a judge. Controlled by hysteria.

Many country's throughout the world have a mixed system where free enterprise thrives yet the system also looks after its own. Medical and social services legal aid and many other things that make life in a country better for every one. A developed country that is so hard that it does not have time for its disadvantaged can do nothing but hang its head in shame.

Why was capitalism started?

Capitalism was begun as an experimental type of economy here in the United States. We were very fortunate that such an experiment was started in the USA. It was overwhelmingly successful and allowed us to realize "the American dream," which every immigrant to this country longed to achieve. Capitalism allows every person--no matter how poor or in unfortunate circumstances--to use his intellect, his determination, his ideas, his assets, his abilities, skills and talents to begin his own business or whatever his dream is to succeed in this great country. And capitalism was the economic tool that enabled success. Capitalism allows any person to achieve everything within his own limits or boundaries, and when he has reached the pinnacle of his success, it is possible that he will hire others to fill the jobs he has available, thus expanding and aggrandizing his organization and thereby calling for the hiring of even more employees. Capitalism was the greatest economic experiment ever carried out in this country--or any other country--and it has overwhelmingly succeeded, taking with it to the top all of its participants, financeers and workers. There have been many books written about capitalism and its achievements. Two examples are "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead," both written by Ayn Rand.

How long has Barack Obama been a socialist?

Contrary to what you hear on talk shows, Mr. Obama is not a socialist. He is a member of the Democratic party and a firm believer in capitalism. However, he also believes in economic fairness, but that just makes him a person who is concerned about others, since he himself was raised in a lower-middle class family that struggled to make ends meet. Caring about the poor or wanting a fairer tax code does not necessarily make a person a socialist, and there are members of both major parties who would like to see something done about income inequality. (It should also be noted that there is one member of congress who does identify as a socialist-- Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.)
