The Hawthorne studies have dramatically affected organization management in its illumination of the effects of things such as maintaining clean work stations, clearing floors of obstacles, and even relocating workstations, and how they can result in increased productivity for short periods of time. Due to this, the term is often used to describe any sort of temporary increase in productivity. Basically, it states that individuals become more productive when appreciated more, or are being watched.
