Depending on your relationship with the bank, how long a check takes to clear depends on if you do a lot of deposits, less withdrawals or always cashing checks with a dollar in the account, overdraft monster.
Checks will never be held if you show good relationship.

Note: It also depends on the size of the deposit. For example, I just deposited a check larger than $5K. $200 is available immediately (I currently have more than that in the account now); I say this because if I was not able to cover the check, if would probably take 2-3 business days to make that much available. Next tier, $4.8K available in 3 business days and the balance available in 5 business days.
