One could count EVERY item (if the group were small enough), or base a count on statistics (assuming randomness) and count, say, every one item in ten. I am not a professional statistician, nor have I spent my life doing many, many inventories (only a few), but I was an actuary so I believe I know the rudamentary principles of it.
