It is important to know that you are not guaranteed a federal tax refund. If you believe you will receive a refund after filing your taxes, you can check your status about three days after you file to confirm whether or not your file was accepted or not from the IRS if you do it online or a couple of weeks if you mail it in. You can go to "where's my Refund" on the IRS website to track your refund as well. Refunds generally take longer to receive the closer to tax deadline (April 15th) as well.

When can a federal tax return be seized for debt?

Federal tax refunds can be seized by the IRS for tax arrearages without the normal legal procedures being used. Tax refunds cannot be seized for creditor debt, for example, a judgment for non payment of a credit card account. But, once the refund is placed in a bank account it can be subject to levy by a judgment creditor. The Federal Government can also offset your federal tax refund to pay a student loan debt.
