Yes if you stole a phone and even if you did put it into airplane mode there is still a 20% chance of it getting tracked because airplane mode only limits the radio signals to and from the device and does not fully block the signals. So if you find a lost or stolen phone just do the right thing and find out whos it is and return it Thats what I did with an i phone 4 and I even got a small reward.
