The current record is held by NASA's X-43A scramjet at Mach 9.6 or almost 7,000 miles per hour. True, the NASA X-43A can hit Mach 9.6 which is about 7300 miles per hour. But an Aussie scram jet recently hit Mach 10 (about 7600 mph). It must be reported that it did this upon re-entry after a test run, so it's kinda like gravity aided. Both vehicles are unmanned. The fastest manned jet is (still!!) the SR-71 Blackbird.
