This depends on the nature of the name change:

If it is simple spelling mistake, or a nickname has been used instead of the exact name on the passport (such as Jake Jones instead of Jacob Jones), most airlines will not bother to kick up a fuss.

If the entire name is to be changed to a new passenger (such as Jake Jones to Paul Smith) then it will depend on the fare rules attached to your ticket. The cheapest fares on offer from an airline will usually include clauses specifically forbidding any name changes, as this is a massive administrative problem for the airline to deal with. Often, therefore, this will involve buying a totally new ticket. It's best to check with your airline to discuss the options available. Try and find the terms and conditions you signed up for when you purchased the ticket. Or, if you haven't bought it, buy one which allows for name changes at a low charge.
