If you are a British Citizen, you need your UK passport and if you stay within 90 days then you need not a Visa if you are eligible under the Visa waiver program, if otherwise then you need a visa. For US citizens, you need you valid US passport to enter back in the US.

You need a Visa, which you can apply for at a USA embassy or consulate. There is a fee for the application. You have to fill in forms.

You will be asked to provide a lot of information about yourself and your relatives and associates. You will be asked about criminal records, political activities and your religious beliefs. You will need to prove that you are in stable employment and that you are coming back to your job. It will help if you own fixed property (a house).

You need to say why and where you are going in the USA and prove that you have funds to pay hotel accommodation and transport costs.

And then if they like the answers on the forms you have to sit through a personal interview where someone tests your answers and evaluates you.

If you get the Visa, and travel to the USA you can still be turned back at your port of entry.
