The Wright Brothers' first flights were done at Kill Devil Hills, NC. It is four miles from Kitty Hawk. If the Wright Brothers were alive today and wanted to visit Kill Devil Hills, they would have to land at Edenton or Elizabeth City.

The Wright Brothers
Air planes were invented by the Wright Brothers. The Wright Brothers finished and took off in their first plane in 1903.
The Wright brothers invented the airplane, however they used a catapult so that the plane could take off. the airplane named 14-bis, the first airplane built by Alberto Santos Dumont, took off through its own means.
The Wright brothers took off on December 17, 1903. They left from Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
The biggest issue that the Wright brothers had to overcome to achieve their goal of maned flight was weight. If the engine weighted too much the plane would not get off the ground.
The Wright brothers used a launching rail system and a simple wooden dolly to get their glider off the ground. They would run along the rail system attached to the glider to build up enough speed for takeoff, while the dolly helped stabilize and guide the glider during the initial phase of the flight.
Orville piloted the 'Flyer' on the first of it's historic flights.
Richard Pearse from Temuka in New Zealand invented the airplane before the wright brothers, his homemade plane took off and ascended 3m on many occasions and on 31st of March 1903 (many months before the wright brothers flew) he took off and flew several hundred meters, but he crashed into a gorse bush at the end of his flight which is what made his flight 'unsuccessful'. The wright brothers were the first to make a successful flight.
The first flight of the Wright flyer took off from Kitty Hawk North Carolina, and landed 120 feet away in Kitty Hawk North Carolina.
Kitty Hawk
Strangely enough, the Wright Brothers did not invent the airplane! Don't believe it? Do your homework. Airplane flights of 2 hours and longer were quite common before the Brothers got off the ground. Technology and Physics of lift and wing shapes was already proven and in use. Getting airborne with self-contained power was the only missing link.
