Both of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City collapsed on September 11, 2001 as a result of impacts by large passenger jets, hijacked by Islamic terrorists and flown into the towers in a suicide attack.

Although the towers withstood the initial impacts of the planes, fires from jet fuel and interior furnishings eventually weakened the structures and they collapsed completely. The North Tower was hit by American Airlines flight 11 at 8:46 AM EDT and collapsed at 10:28 AM. But the South Tower had collapsed first at 9:59 AM, after being hit by United Airlines flight 175 at 9:03 AM EDT.
