The pilot was Chesley B. Sullenburger of Danville, CA, who was 58 at the time. The copilot/ first officer was Jay Skiles, also of Danville, 64. On January 15, 2009, Sullenberger successfully landed Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, with no loss of life, after the plane lost both engines after striking a flock of birds as it took off from LaGuardia Airport in New York City.
US Airways Flight 1549 ditched in the Hudson River after multiple bird strikes when taking off from LaGuardia Airport with a crew of 5 and 150 passengers. Everyone survived.
155 passengers were aboard US Airways Flight 1549 that landed in the Hudson River on January 15th, 2009. The cause of the crash was due to the planes colliding with a flock of geese just minutes after takeoff. The pilot talked to air traffic controllers, asking if he could turn around and land again, or fly to the nearest airport in New Jersey, but then he decided his plane couldn't make it because both the engines failed due to birds getting stuck in both. It was then that he came on the intercom and told the passengers "Brace for heavy impact."
