Aircraft have been used for transportation ever since the late 18th Century, when balloons were used to carry passengers and light freight between towns & cities.

Transportation by heavier-than-air aircraft began soon after The Wright Brothers made their first successful flight at Kittyhawk, USA in the December of 1903. In the few years that followed this historic event, and after the design of the Wright 'Flyer' had been patented, similar aircraft were used across the United States for short-hop transport of small freight items between towns. The first passenger service began in England around 1910, ferrying small groups of 3-4 people between counties over short distances. At around this time, the first air mail service began as well, also in England, between Windsor and Henley just outside London.
