The Wright brother was first in achieving proper flight, although Richard Pearse did experiment on aviation.
The first to fly was NOT the Wright brothers, it was actually a man called Richard Pearse.
Richard William Pearse (3 December 1877 - 29 July 1953) was a New Zealand farmer and inventor. It is claimed that Pearse flew and landed a machine on 31 March 1903, nine months before the Wright brothers flew their aircraft. This is what makes him famous. However, he himself never claimed it.
New Zealand's famous pioneering aviator was Richard pearse who was experimenting with powered flight about the same time as the wright Brothers.
The Wright Brothers are generally considered the first achieve powered flight. Done so on December, 17th 1903. There are arguments that Richard Pearse had done so in the spring of 1903.
Richard Pearse from Temuka in New Zealand invented the airplane before the wright brothers, his homemade plane took off and ascended 3m on many occasions and on 31st of March 1903 (many months before the wright brothers flew) he took off and flew several hundred meters, but he crashed into a gorse bush at the end of his flight which is what made his flight 'unsuccessful'. The wright brothers were the first to make a successful flight.
There is some very credible evidence that indicates Richard Pearse may have flown on March 31, 1902, over a year before the Wright brothers.

The Wright Brothers (Orville and Wilbur, but Orville first) are credited with the first manned flight of a powered aircraft (not a glider), in December, 1903. Richard Pearse of New Zealand, among others, had flown powered aerial vehicles around the same time. Pearse's single-wing machine, especially, was more like modern aircraft than the Wright's, although they used a stalled-wing (kite) lifting design rather than an airfoil. He may have flown first, but his best-documented flights were not until 1904.
The Wright brothers were Orville and Wilbur Wright.
