It was mainly because it was unsafe. The physical plane itself generated so much heat during flight, that it actually stretched up to around a foot and a half.

I don't know FOR SURE any other reasons, however, a possible theory is that it costed too much money.

Low passenger numbers, high maintenance costs, and airlines could make more money carrying passengers sub-sonically.
