Hyperbole is a form of speech that could be described as extravagant exaggeration. It it not appropriate when writing essays or reports, but a little hyperbole is an effectively way to colour the speech of an character in a short story or to make a point effectively in a humorous piece of writing.

example: [He must have jumped a mile]

{He jumped very high in the air}
