I had a similar situation with our 1995 Astro van. At idle and low rpm the engine had a shake that made it seem out of balance. As you accelerated this seemed to improve. Unfortunately the culprit was the central port induction system which is about $800.00 plus insallation. It had a stuck poppet in it which prevented fuel from reaching one of the cylinders.

The engine shutting off could be the control module or the pickup coil within the distributor. The steering wheel locks???
