Backfiring generally indicates a timing problem. The sparkplugs are firing a little too late for some reason and that lets the explosion come out through the tail pipe instead of staying in the combustion chamber. It could be as simple as a cracked distributor cap allowing the spark to jump across the moisture. Or it could be more serious.
