If the tailgate is dropped hard it can toggle the locking mechanism. If you don't have a key to unlock the tailgate, you'll have to remove the plastic side of the tailgate (the inside) and flip the locking lever back to the unlocked position. While you have the cover off you might as well put some drops of oil on all of the metal moving parts inside the tailgate.
The wiring or the locking mechanism may be damaged in your ford explorer. You need to take it to an auto shop to have diagnostic testing done.

The rear tailgate lock on my taurus wagon will not unlock. How do I open the back panel to get to the mechanism
To unlock the tailgate of a 1998 Volvo V70 AWD, use the key fob or the key itself to unlock the vehicle. If the tailgate is still locked, check for a manual release inside the car, typically located near the driver's seat or in the trunk area. In some cases, the tailgate might also have a secondary lock mechanism that can be disengaged by pressing the button on the dashboard or the tailgate itself. If these methods do not work, there may be an issue with the locking mechanism that requires inspection.
To unlock the tailgate of a Vauxhall Meriva, use the key fob by pressing the tailgate release button, or manually unlock it using the key in the driver's door lock. If the vehicle is equipped with central locking, ensure the doors are unlocked first. Additionally, there may be a release button located inside the car near the driver's seat. For models with a manual latch, simply pull the handle to open the tailgate.
I had the same problem. I could unlock (dis-arm) from the drivers door until it the switch failed. Then I would use the passanger door until that one failed. Finally i had to take the Jeep to the dealer (or leave it unlcoked all the time) Each door has a dis-arm switch. Even the tailgate has a switch. the dealer replaced the faulty switches in both front doors - all is well. Hope this helps.
