I don't know if your Ranger is the same but on the 2001 Ford Explorer the 4X4 module is located behind the right front passenger kick panel
There is no such part as a piston sensor.
I was looking at one of Fords websites and it shows 2 part numbers for a 2001 Ford Ranger , 3.0 liter V6 engine Mass Air Flow sensor (Motorcraft AFLS-152 and AFLS-188RM ) * with each different transmission option , rear wheel drive or 4x4
UNDER HOOD, DRIVER SIDE, LOWER ENGINE AREA, BELOW EXHAUST MANIFOLD FLANGE, MOUNTED IN EXHAUST PIPE.
On a 2001 Ford Ranger : If you have selected 4X4 HIGH , yes , you should see (4WD in your dash ) If you have selected 4X4 LOW , yes , you should see (4WD LOW in your dash )
