Sounds like you have air in the system. Beware that these cars have chronic issues with the degas bottle (aka coolant expansion tank) cracking on a seam for no good reason. That can cause coolant to leak, but it may not ledak if the crack is high enough on the bottle. That still creates problems, because the system operates on negative pressure and if it is cracked it will not allow the expansion/contraction process to take place it it will allow air into the system. Air in the system is very problematic. It can cause blockages in coolant flow or if air is surrounding the thermostat, it will not open. The air purging process is also very specific on these cars. You can't just "fill it on a hill" like the old radiators (so the air comes to the high spot and exits). There is a purge valve attached to the degas bottle. Fill the engine with coolant at the engine fill (plastic cap in front of the intake manifold) and fill the degas bottle. Run the car at 2000 RPMs with heat blasting for five minutes. Open the bleeder valve until coolant flows freely from the bleeder valve. Repeat a couple times.
