Clearly they are not the same, they have different cubic capacities. An engineer might be able to tell you if you could substitute one for the other in any given vehicle.
as long as the engines are the same ie; 351/302 the anser is yes

I'm not a mechanic / technician but as far as I know the answer is ( NO ) I believe 1991 to 1994 Ford 4.0 liter V6 engines use the same engine block
If the same year, yes.
About in the middle of the truck, on the inside of the frame rail on the driver side. If it's in the same area of my 96
no - the 1999 Ford F-150 has a choice of 4.2 L V6 / 4.6 L - SOHC - V8 / or 5.4 L - SOHC V8 engines
I was looking at fordparts.com and it shows the same part number ( Motorcraft DGE - 446 ) for the six tower coil pack on a 1994 Ford Explorer 4.0 liter OHV engine as the 4.0 liter OHV or SOHC engines in a 1998 Ford Explorer , so apparently the answer is YES
YES , according to the 1997 Ford Windstar owners manual and www.fordparts. com both the 3.0 liter V6 and the 3.8 liter V6 engines use the ( Motorcraft FL-400-A engine oil filter )
Lincoln Navigator Ford Expeditions Ford F-150 are all the same engines.
I'm not a mechanic / technician but after looking at fordparts.com I would say ( YES ) The Motorcraft part number ( DGE-446 ) is the same for a 1997 or a 2010 Ford Explorer with the 4.0 liter SOHC , V6 engine ( I also checked the 2006 Ford Mustang 4.0 liter SOHC and it had the same part number )
