your transmission is stuck in what we call limp mode. Take it to a transmission shop and have an electrical scan done. Does your speedometer work or not ? If not then it could be as simple as a output speed sensor or broken wire
stuck in first gear?
Check your fuel pressure first then go from there.
Is this a manual transmission? If so, this is a pretty common problem for these cars. Probably going to have to replace the shifter cable. About $50 at Advance.

check your transmission fluid or it may be something electrical if your cavalier transmission is run by electronics. If not it may be a sun gear inside the transmission so you may need to get the transmission rebuilt.
This can be a number of things. What comes to mind first is, if this is an A/T you may have a bad lock-up torque converter, or the solenoid is stuck. If the engine runs and idles great until you put it in drive, this would be my guess.
There is a clip on the front of the knob. Pry it out with a screwdriver.
