If you have already checked the fuse, then it must be the relay switch under the front dash or in the fuse panel
The 1988 Ford Taurus cooling fan relay switch can be found on the front drivers side quarter panel. The fan relay switch should be labeled as such.
Unscrew that puppy!According to my Haynes manual, the reverse light switch is located on the top of the left end (driver's side) of the transaxel. Unplug the electrical connector from the switch and remove the switch with a socket DO NOT use an open end wrench.Installation is the reverse. Tighten the switch to 24 Ft. Lbs.
Could be blubs burntout, fuse blown or a bad relay switch. If that's not problem. Then could be switch on the shifter or on transmission depends on year of car. when you shift to reverse it should trigger switch for backup lights.Hope this helps.
The exterior lights do not have a relay. They are directly turned on by the headlight switch.
Could be a couple of problems, one lose wire in pig tail harness, but since you say its both back up lights it may be a relay switch when you place into reverse the switch does not respond to activate the lights
The Park-Neutral Switch with the Reverse Light Relay could be malfunctioning. It is located on top of the transaxle body, in the Engine Compartment. Check to see if there is power comming through the reverse light relay plug.

There is a switch on the transmission that recognizes when it is put in reverse, the same one that turns on the back up lights on a car. A horn with a flasher type relay circuit is connected to the line and whenever the vehicle is put in reverse you get a beep beep along with the lights.
There is no relay. The voltage comes from the fuse box directly to the headlight switch.
To wire lights to the accessories via the fuse box with a separate switch, first, identify an appropriate fuse slot in the fuse box that corresponds to the accessory circuit. Use a fused relay to connect the switch to the fuse box, ensuring the relay is wired to the positive terminal of the fuse slot. Then, connect the lights to the output of the relay, and ground the lights appropriately. Finally, ensure the switch is properly installed and can control the relay to turn the lights on and off.
