You need to count the plug wires. If there is 6 then it is a V6 engine.
If it has 8 then it is a V8
The 305 was standard in an 89 Caprice Classic, so the answer is obviously yes.
You've already answered your own question, Sparky - it's a V8

The V8 engine has ( 2 ) more engine cylinders than the V6 engine
If it is a V8 engine it will be located on the side of the engine toward the front. If it is the V6 it will be an electric pump located inside the fuel tank.
The 4.3 V6 was the base engine. Most came with the 305 V8 but the 350 V8 was an option.

A V8 engine differs from a V6 engine in many ways. A V8 engine is larger, more powerful, will make the vehicle go faster and will be more expensive on gas than a V6.
i had a 1982 Chevy caprice classic that had a 4.4 small V8 olsmoblie engine in it.
