It warms the coolant. The block heater screws into the side of the block right above the oil filter. It takes a 17 mm hex socket to remove the factory brass " plug ". This is not a freeze plug but a threaded hole just for this application. It takes a 24 mm regular socket to install the gm oem heater. If you have a 4x4 it is easier to drop the front drive shaft out of the way to install the heater. The drive shaft uses 11mm bolts. You will loose about 2 gallons of dex cool when you do this job if you don't drain the system before hand. '

I sure sounds like a coolant leak at the block heater plate. If you are looking up at the engine and it is about 3" left of the oil filter that's what is it. In extremely cold climates this port is were the block heater attaches, in most places it is just a bolted on plate with an RTV silicon material for gasketing.
