This is a common fault. On top of the gearbox, is the selector housing where the cables go to it. This is held in place with 5 x 10mm bolts, it is a bit tricky to get out. Support the engine with a jack, - and release the engine mounting to give you more room. The selector housing should lift straight out. You will see that a bolt has fallen out and disappeared into the gearbox. Don't worry too much about the missing bolt, the swarf magnet usually holts this in place more many years. Find a replacement bolt, standard 10mm head, tighten with some thread lock and rebuild. Job done.
