Depends, If it makes noise only while turning or driving on a curve, then it is one of your hub bearings gone bad. I just replaced mine and it was somewhat of a pain but the noise went away. While driving, If you turn left and you hear the noise then it is the passenger side bearing gone bad and if you turn right and hear the noise it will be the driver side bearing . Hope this helps you..... Here is a link you can view to give you an idea of the part needed...

If your vehicle has 4 wheel drive, then yes, it has a differential in the front axle.

V6 firewall 3 - 6 2 - 5 1 - 4 front of Mercury Mountaineer ============================= V8 firewall 4 - 8 3 - 7 2 - 6 1 - 5 front of Mercury Mountaineer
I'm having the same problem. 98 Mountaineer. I think it's wheel bearing or possibly c/v joint. it sounds like a shredding almost, or grinding noise + squeak in the driver side front wheel hub.

If you vehicle is front-wheel drive, more than likely, that grinding crunching sound when you turn is coming from the CV joints.
On a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer : The gas tank is under the vehicle , on the drivers side It is in front of the rear tire and runs from the rear towards the front of the vehicle
Yes , shock absorbers front and rear
If your vehicle is All wheel drive you don't unless you drop the front drive shaft, but don't my 1999 is AWD it has saved me numerous times.
To remove the front drive shaft on a Mercury Mountaineer, first, ensure the vehicle is securely lifted and supported. Disconnect the drive shaft at both ends by removing the bolts that attach it to the front differential and the transfer case using the appropriate socket. Gently slide the drive shaft out of its mounting points and take care to handle it carefully to avoid damaging any components. Finally, check for any wear on the U-joints before reinstallation or replacement.
