That's the lock-out that keeps you from moving the transmission out of Park without the brake being down. It should have done that its entire life (my '95 Mystique did), and isn't anything to worry about. The codes being read wouldn't have had anything to do with it.

Why is there a clicking noise coming from under your gear shifter when you depress your brakes on 2005 Pontiac vibe?

This is the locking mechanism that prevents you from shifting from park without depressing the brake pedal or pressing the release button to the right of the gear shifter. This is the locking mechanism that prevents you from shifting from park without depressing the brake pedal or pressing the release button to the right of the gear shifter.

When you push the brakes there is a clicking in the steering column on a 2001 ford escape?

The 2001 Escape, with the gear shifter on the steering column, has an interlock solenoid located by the shifter assembly. The purpose is to lock the shifter in PARK until you depress the brake pedal. This is to prevent "sudden acceleration" where you engage the transmission with the brake off and the car shoots forward or backward. When you press the brake pedal a switch is closed that turns on the break lights and activates the solenoid, generating a magnetic field that withdraws the interlock pin, allowing you to move the shifter out of Park and into Drive or Reverse. The solenoid can make a clicking noise. We never noticed the clicking sound in our 2001 Escape until this mechanism had begun to fail, locking the shifter in Park regardless of the position of the brake pedal.

Why do your brakes make a clicking noise when you slow down?

The brakes may make a clicking noise if the caliper is going bad. I just changed the brakes and the rotors and discovered my car was making a clicking noise. The garage I took it to replaced the caliper, so now it doesn't make the noise anymore.
