Here is the deal on the numbers matching thing. In the 60's, this was something GM came up with to help prevent auto theft. The engine serial numbers match part of the vin number. This only really comes into play on a low production number vehicle, like a big block camaro, or chevelle. Your 64 either came with a 6, 283, or 327. To retain that original motor, would probably hinder the value, as it would increase with that particular car, by updating it. Anyway, the vin, and the numbers on the pad, right in front of the drivers side cylinder head, will match, if it is the original motor from the factory.
