there is a small yellow button located to the left of the steering wheel and if it doesnt work push down on the trunk and the push the button again it happens all the time with my car
Mine doesn't have automatic trunk release. I use the key to unlock my doors to open the trunk.

There is no remote trunk release. You must get out and open it using the handle.

In a 1997 Chevy Lumina, the trunk release button is typically located on the driver's side, either on the dashboard near the door or on the center console. Additionally, there is often a trunk release lever located on the key fob if your vehicle is equipped with remote keyless entry. If you're unable to find it, you can also open the trunk using the key.
Fold the back seat down, and look in the trunk itself... You should see a yellow lever. Pull it and it should open your trunk, with out the keys. Other wise you'll have to call a locksmith (of get a pry-bar)
