A 96 vehicle should use 134A refrigerant rather than freon. You'll need an installation kit with a gauge. The low pressure side is near the receiver/dryer. The receiver/dryer is a metal device that looks like a can. The low side "port" should be closeby. Connect the gauge to the port and make sure the pressure doesn't go too high when you add refrigerant. Make sure the AC is running as you add refrigerant and as you get closer to the proper pressure, slow down the flow from the can by closing the valve at the can. Follow the directions on the kit and it shouldn't be too difficult. Note that if the AC system has completely leaked out all refrigerant, you will need to have the system repaired and evacuated to remove all air and moisture from the system.
Go to your local auto parts store. They will have kits with directions for you to do the job at home.
You add freon to the a/c by using the low side, suction side (larger hose).............
Buy a kit a t Wal-Mart or auto parts comes with instructions

I have a 1996 land rover 4.0 and need to add freon. I have the gauge, but don't know where to connect it to
You can add Freon to your 1999 Chevy cooling system through the low pressure port. Connect your Freon bottle to the low pressure port and release the Freon into the system.
Freon is a very touchy thing to work with. The EPA bans its release into the atmosphere, so only experts and professionals know how to add and subtract Freon from the car safely. Take your car to a mechanic or a Chevy dealer for this.
