There is not a gear in the engine, they do have a speed limiter in the computer. Also some older automatic transmissions have a "governor" to adjust shift points.

If the vehicle has the V6 it can have the 125C 3 speed automatic transaxle or the optional 440T4 Automatic Overdrive transmission. I found no reference to a procedure to adjust the bands for either transaxle in my 1989 factory service manual.
