Remove the starter power wire from the battery that goes to starter. Starter is between the transmission and engine. Remove the 3 bolts from the starter to the transhousing. Replace new starter re-install the power wire.:)
Disconnect the battery first!!! Also, besides the battery cable there should also be a starter switch wire (probably a spade connection).
The starter should be between the engine and trans on the right side of the truck. Disconnect battery, remove wire from starter to battery. There should only be 3 bolts attaching the starter to the trans bellhousing.

Get a repair manual from your local auto zone its hard to explain where it is, on my 4.0L Ranger its on the bottom left .
its usually on the right side between the engine and transmission, 3 bolts hold it on
The 1997 Ford Ranger engines are fuel injected , so no carburetor
Disconnect the - battery cable Raise and support vehicle Disconnect the wiring at the top of starter Remove starter mounting bolts Twist starter to remove
