How do you change a water pump on a 2001 Lincoln Ls?

First, you will start off by draining the coolant. the petcock is located on the bottom of the radiator (passenger side). Loosening the filler cap helps it to breath while draining.

Remove Intake hose which goes across the front of the Engine. On a 3.9 (V8) the water pump is located at the top center of all the cluster of pulleys. before removing the serpentine belt. first, crack loose the (3) 8mm bolts on the w/pump pulley, then make a diagram of the belt as to how it is routed around all the pulleys, then remove the belt by simply using a 3/8 drive breaker bar or ratchet on the spring loaded Idler pulley.

Now, remove w/pump pulley and the (5) bolts that hold the pump. the pump will now pull straight out toward front of the car. you also must be careful when Installing new pump because the pump has an O-ring that seals between the Block and a fiber ring that can break off. reverse the procedure when reassembling and don't forget to purge the air out of the cooling system.
