AS THIS IS A SOD OF A JOB I WOULD RECOMMEND FITTING A NEW ALTERNATOR AS I HAVE HEARD IT AS A COMMON FAILURE PROBLEM ON THESE CARS.

AFTER REMOVING WHEEL, SPLASH SHIELD AND AUX BELT THEN DISCONNECT BATTERY AND REMOVE REMOVE TRACK ROD NUT AND RELEASE TRACK ROD END THEN REMOVE THE DRIVESHAFT!!!!

YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO THE JOB WITHOUT DOING THIS BUT ACCESS IS VERY VERY VERY LIMITED

TRY AND REMOVE DRIVESHAFT INTERMEDIATE BEARING BRACKET. HA HA HA

GIVE UP ON THIS THEN

REMOVE THE TWO 10MM BOLTS AND BRACKET ON SIDE OF ALTERNATOR THAT SUPPORT IT

THEN GET AS MANY 1/2" EXTENSIONS YOU CAN FIND AND A UJ BENDY ONE TO ENABLE YOU TO REACH AND RELEASE THE TWO RETAINING BOLTS 13MM

ONCE THESE ARE RELEASED THEY SHOULD TURN BY FINGER IF YOU CAN REACH THEM. THEY ARE PRETTY INACCESIBLE

REMOVE THE BOLTS AND PRISE THE ALTERNATOR OUT .

REMOVE THE WIRES AND TAKE ALTERNATOR OUT OF CAR.

REPLACEMENT IS A REVERSE OF THIS BUT TO MAKE MY LIFE EASIER I REMOVED THE MOUNTING BRACKET AND FITTED THE NEW ALTERNATOR TO IT AND FITTED IT WITH ONLY 2 BOLTS, THE LOWER ONE AND THE ONE ON THE OTHER SIDE WITH THE SUPPORT BRACKET. YOU WILL SEE HOW WITH IT REMOVED. NAUGHTY BUT EASIER!!!!

THIS ONLY TOOK ME ABOUT 9 HOURS!!!!!!

How do you remove alternator on 2000 cougar?

It should be the same as for a 2002 Mercury Cougar which is answered in WikiAnswer under the Question; " How to remove alternator from a 2002 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6." The 2000 Cougar may be different by having an upper alternator BOLT. If it does, and you can't lift the bolt out (after fully loosening the bolt), lower the alternator and you can, then, lift the bolt out. When you begin to install the alternator (attach the power wire, and the wire connector) place the BOLT in the upper hole in the alternator, and THEN, raise the alternator to install.

What does it mean when your battery light flickers on your 1999 Mercury Cougar?

Typically it means you should start saving for a new alternator. One of the not so rare engineering flaws on this generation Cougar is the alternator, which will die due to poor factory wiring fairly often. There are mods to fix this problem, and Ford Lincoln Mercury dealers will see instructions to change the wiring of the alternator to be like that of the '01 and '02 Cougar2s when they go to change the Alt, not all alternator shops will necessarily know this is an issue. If you take this on yourself, know this, the after market (ie motocraft) alternators for the Cougar are not nearly as reliable as the genuine Ford OEM product. And also, even if you take the alternator to have it checked at pep-boys or such, it will probably show that it is still good while it is indeed the issue.
