On 4 cylinder models, the crank sensor should be mounted on the driver's side of the transmission bellhousing right where it bolts to the engine about midway up the side. Just follow the exhaust downpipe and the wires to it. It is held on by two small bolts. To replace it, you just disconnect the wire harness from it, unbolt it, and pull it out, then do the opposite to replace it. **Some models make use of specially machined bolts to maintain correct sensor clearances, so be careful not to lose or damage them**

V6 and V8 models are more complicated. The sensor should be located on the passenger side, top 'corner' of the transmission bellhousing near where the base of the EGR tube bolts to the engine. You may, or may not, need to remove, and/or set aside, the following to gain working access to it (basically, if it's in your way, move it, if it's not, leave it be):

  • the sparkplug wire loom
  • the two EGR hoses *mark which goes where*
  • the wiring harness to the EGR transducer
  • the EGR valve and gasket
  • the oil pressure sending unit *may need a special tool available from most auto parts stores*
  • loosen the EGR tube bolts on the intake manifold end and remove them from the exhaust end *the exhaust end of the EGR tube uses a gasket that will have to be removed and replaced with a new one*
  • remove the EGR tube

Now you can disconnect the wiring harness from the crank position sensor and remove the two mounting bolts from it. Pull the sensor out and replace it. Installation is the reverse procedure. **Don't forget to use a new EGR tube gasket on the exhaust end, and the oil pressure sending unit (if removed) needs thread sealant (don't get sealant in the sending unit opening). The EGR valve gasket can be reused (if good) or replaced as necessary**
