It's a huge pain but I managed to do it with a 3" extension. With the front passenger side wheel off you can just make your fingers in there far enough to do it.
If your Explorer has ac, you have to remove the passenger side front wheel and then the wheel well flap. The job of replacing the spark plugs will then be much easier. Sounds like a lot of trouble, but well worth it.

To change the spark plugs in a 2008 Ford Explorer, first ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the battery. Remove the engine cover if necessary, then locate the spark plugs, which are typically under the ignition coils. Carefully disconnect the ignition coil connectors, remove the coils, and then use a spark plug socket to unscrew the old spark plugs. Install the new plugs, reattach the coils, and reconnect the battery.
Obviously- the spark plugs were not the issue :)
Make sure you are using Ford OEM (Motorcraft is not always OEM) Spark Plugs that are designed for you explorer.
Disconnect the battery, remove the spark plug cables, boots and spark plugs from the driver side, and put in the new spark plugs and replace everything. Lift the passenger side on a jack, remove the tire, from under that side of the car, remove the spark plug cable, boots and plug. Replace the plugs and everything else, then lower the car.
To change the spark plugs on the passenger side of a 1995 Camaro Z28, first, ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the intake duct to gain access to the spark plugs, then carefully detach the spark plug wires by pulling them straight off the plugs. Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to unscrew the old plugs, then install the new plugs, tightening them to the manufacturer’s specifications. Finally, reconnect the spark plug wires and the intake duct before reconnecting the battery.

On the Ford Explorer Q + A website , I read about a fellow with a 2 door Explorer Sport ,4.0 L , and what he did was jack up the passenger front and remove the passenger front wheel , safely support the vehicle, pull the rubber fender liner down and access his # 2 and # 3 spark plugs that way. It's a good thing that platinum plugs last longer ! (Helpfull)
