To change the timing chain on a 1998 Chevy Prizm, first, disconnect the battery and remove any components obstructing access, such as the intake manifold and front cover. Align the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft to ensure proper timing, then remove the old chain and tensioner. Install the new timing chain and tensioner, ensuring everything is correctly aligned, and reassemble the components in reverse order. Finally, double-check all connections and settings before reconnecting the battery and starting the engine.
Prizm's had a timing belt up until 1998 when they then switched to a timing chain.

The '99 Chevy Prizm has a timing chain, not a timing belt, so it does not need to be replaced.
The 2001 prizm has a timing chain.
From what I read it has a timing chain, not a timing belt. I asked the dealer about scheduled maintenance, and changing the timing belt was never mentioned.

I can't say for sure, but I have a 2001 Prizm and called some mechanics to look into having the belt changed, and they told me I didn't need to because it has a chain. According to the repair manual from 1993 through 1997 the Prizm used a timing belt and was an interference engine. From 1998 until end of production the Prizm used a timing chain. same with its mechanical twin, the Toyota corolla.
